Director of Bands, Fine Arts Department Chair

Marc Telles  serves as the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at John B. Connally High School. Prior to this appointment, he served as Fine Arts Department Chair and Associate Director at Harlingen High School in Harlingen, TX.

Mr. Telles has served as conductor for concert ensembles that have performed in Washington D.C., New York City, the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana and throughout Texas. Mr. Telles’ concert bands have received over a decade of UIL Sweepstakes Awards from 3 different high schools in the Varsity, Non-Varsity, and Sub Non-Varsity levels. Mr. Telles’ award winning jazz bands have received numerous superior ratings and “best in class" awards at festivals in Austin, Houston, El Paso, San Antonio, Kingsville, McAllen and performed at Battery Park in New York City. In 2015, Mr. Telles was invited to serve as a guest jazz conductor at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. Marc Telles has served as an associate director and director for marching bands that have received numerous “Grand Champion” awards, UIL first division awards, 3 consecutive UIL Area G 6A Championships and have performed at Bands of America Regional Championships as well as the UIL 6A State Marching Contest four times. In two years as the Connally HS Director of Bands, the Cougar Band has been named "best in class" at the contests in San Antonio, Austin, DFW and College Station. In 2015, the Cougar Band was an Area finalist in one of Texas' most competitive 5A UIL Areas.

As a saxophone teacher, Mr. Telles has had many students achieve All-Region, All-Area and All-State honors placing as high as first chair in the TMEA top 6A All-State Band and the 6A All-State Jazz Ensemble.  Mr. Telles’ saxophone students and ensembles have received first division awards at UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest and he has served as the saxophone sectional teacher for the Texas 5A and 6A All-State Band. 

Mr. Telles grew up in San Antonio,  has a Bachelors' Degree from Texas State University and a Masters' Degree from the University of North Texas. Mr. Telles is a member of the Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Texas Music Adjudicators Association (TMAA), and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster Fraternity. Before relocating to Austin, Mr. Telles served in leadership capacities as the TMEA Region 28 Band Division Chair and the TBA Region 28 Representative. Telles also served as an elected member of the TMAA Committee on Standards of Adjudication and Performance Practices. He is an active clinician and adjudicator for concert festivals, UIL concert and sight-reading contests, region honor band hearings and the UIL 5A and 6A Area Marching Contest.
