Originally born in San Jose, California, Ryan Thornton comes to Austin, Texas after spending 10 years in The Woodlands, TX. He graduated from The Woodlands High School in 2015, a consistent Bands of America and Texas UIL State finalist earning multiple championships at BOA Conroe, BOA San Antonio, and BOA Grand Nationals.
Thornton spent two years studying at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, one of those years as a Music Education major. While there, he performed with the TCU Horned Frog Band in the Color Guard for two seasons, earning solos both seasons.
Thornton pursued a performance career in Drum Corps International. He spent his first season in 2015 with Crossmen Drum and Bugle corps as a baritone and mellophone player. He was later contracted by the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps Color Guard in 2018 and earned a Silver Medal at DCI Finals.
Thornton spent his first winter guard season with Bri’A Winter Guard from the University of Texas at Arlington. He spent his most recent indoor season with Axis Color Guard from Katy, TX.
Thornton began his teaching career as an Assistant Instructor at Cypress Springs HS and Cypress Park HS under the direction of Grace Zientek. There he helped both winter guard programs achieve success. Cypress Springs achieved three 2nd Place TCGC Regional placements, 2nd Place at TCGC Area, and 6th Place at State Finals (making finals for the first time in over ten years). Cypress Park achieved three Top 4 Regional placements and 8th Place at TCGC Area.
John B. Connally HS is Mr. Thornton’s first color guard directorship. While at Connally, he is assisting with the Dance Department under the direction of Terrie Meyer. He also assists with the Vista Ridge HS Band and Color Guard, who were recently named State Champions at the 2018 6A Texas State UIL Marching Band Championship.
